Sr Software Engineer (Mainframe / COBOL)

As a Sr Software Engineer in Bangalore , you will join a diverse and passionate engineering team responsible for delivering highly reliable card and merchant payment solutions that serve financial institutions across the globe.

Job Summary

ACI Worldwide is seeking an experienced Sr Software Engineer with strong Mainframe and COBOL development expertise to join our Card & Merchant Management (CMM) engineering team. This role focuses on designing, developing, enhancing, and supporting mission-critical payment processing applications used by leading financial institutions worldwide.

The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in COBOL-based development, strong analytical problem-solving skills, experience in high-volume transaction processing environments, and a passion for adopting AI-powered engineering practices to improve quality, productivity, and operational excellence.

A Typical Day at ACI

• Design, develop, test, and maintain high-quality software solutions supporting ACI's card payment platforms.
• Develop and support applications utilizing COBOL, JCL, DB2, and VSAM on IBM Mainframe environments.
• Participate in architecture reviews, technical design discussions, and code reviews to ensure engineering excellence.
• Develop and execute automated unit, integration, and regression tests to ensure product quality.
• Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve customer-reported defects and production incidents.
• Collaborate closely with Product Management, Professional Services, Customer Support, and Engineering teams.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, solution designs, and engineering specifications.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, estimation, daily standups, reviews, and retrospectives.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on performance, resiliency, maintainability, and operational excellence.
• Leverage AI-assisted engineering tools such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or similar technologies to enhance software development productivity and quality.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Understand and adhere to all corporate policies including the ACI Code of Business Conduct and Ethics.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Needed to Succeed

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• Minimum 8+ years of software development experience.
• Strong expertise in COBOL, JCL, and DB2 development.
• Hands-on experience with IBM Mainframe technologies.
• Experience developing and supporting high-volume transaction processing systems.
• Experience using AI-powered development tools (GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, or similar) to improve engineering productivity, code quality, testing, and problem-solving.
• Ability to effectively apply AI solutions to software development, automated testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and operational workflows.
• Experience with source code management tools such as Git.
• Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working within Agile software development methodologies.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within global cross-functional teams.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience

• Experience within the payments industry supporting Visa, Mastercard, Discover, AMEX, JCB, or other card payment networks.
• Knowledge of card issuing, acquiring, authorization, clearing, settlement, or interchange processing.
• Experience with Unix/Linux administration and shell scripting.
• Java development experience.
• Strong working knowledge of VSAM.
• Experience supporting mission-critical, high-availability transaction processing environments.
• Experience driving performance engineering, resiliency, and operational excellence initiatives.
• Exposure to cloud-hosted payment platforms and modernization of legacy enterprise applications.
• Experience working within regulated financial services environments.
• Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and automation frameworks.
