Global Risk is a thriving and expert risk management function supporting HSBC globally with all aspects of risk management. The team actively manages a varied and dynamic range of risk types, including security, fraud, information security, contingency, geopolitical, operational, credit, pension, insurance, financial crime and regulatory compliance, market and reputation risks. All parts of the Global Risk team use their skills, insight and integrity to handle established threats and those they see emerging, acting to protect and enable HSBC to deliver sustainable growth. 

  • The primary purpose of the role is to evaluate, recommend and approve transactions, exceptions and annual reviews within a personal approval authority and to ensure prudent and well-structured credit proposals that minimise credit losses.
  • Assist the Head of Credit Risk in assessing on a continuous basis the credit quality of the allocated portfolio, appropriateness of CRRs and approved limits, and whether emerging signs of concern warrant Watch, Worry, Monitor status.
  • Enforce credit risk policies and group guidelines through close collaboration with the Credit Advisory team.
  • Liaise with GPB / HBEU Credit Risk to seek concurrence for large credit facilities including providing clear well considered and balanced credit risk recommendations to senior credit risk approvers.
  • Support other GPB booking centres from a credit risk perspective (PBUS, PBGB, PBLU, PBFR etc..) 
  • Perform second  line assurance activities including the spot checks of credit advisory debtor listing/shortfall exception reports.
  • Coordinate, and to a certain extent, manage the offshore credit risk team in order to ensure a timely and quality support of the PBRS Credit Risk team.


In this role, you will:

Impact on the Business

  • Work collaboratively with the FLOD to deliver standards consistent with those of a world class private bank 
  • Demonstrate an awareness of Banks obligations in terms of  Compliance and Legal issues and  ensure that the Group and Regulatory Guidelines are  adhered to, strictly and in spirit, in order to protect the Group’s reputation 
  • Understanding of business strategy and the Bank’s credit risk appetite to make decisions that balance effective risk management with business growth/economic profit objectives
  • Understanding and ratification of complex credit applications and client rating models and outputs
  • Ensure credit requests & proposals are monitored and controlled timely & efficiently 
  • Financial product analysis and validation of advance rate for credit purpose locally & wordwild (GPB level)
  • Deal efficiently and timely with exceptions and validations
  • Acting as a second line of defence to provide appropriate challenge to the Credit Advisory team
  • Deputise for the Head of Credit Risk as and when necessary 
  • Support the PBRS Head of Credit Risk to conduct periodic portfolio reviews to identify product and asset class / sector trends, concentration risks, deteriorating counterparty risk and problem exposures.


Customers / Stakeholders

  • Provision of high quality service to other Bank teams according to agreed standards and SLAs: Credit Advisory team, Credit Analytics team, CRO, WCMR


Leadership & Teamwork

  • Train or educate others, keep abreast of industry/regulatory changes
  • Be a role model / mentor and serve as example to other junior staff
  • Collaborate efficiently with the offshore team


Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Understand and ensure compliance with all relevant internal and external regulatory rules and procedures that apply to the conduct of the business.
  • Quality control of all work 
  • To implement the Group’s sustainability / transition risk policies. 
  • Encourage and implement improvements and efficiencies in the credit process without compromising risk standards


Major Challenges

  • Work constructively with the FLOD, whilst demonstrating an  an ability to stand firm where appropriate and in the face of pressure, to ensure that the right risk/reward balance is achieved in terms of its credit activities. This requires a certain character and an ability to convince with good communication and influencing skills. It also requires the ability to understand complex deals in order to have the informed confidence that will allow the Bank’s credit risk to be managed within set boundaries. 
  • Ensuring credit risks within Private Banking portfolios are minimised, leading to a long term quality loan portfolio earning a satisfactory return. Understand risk profile of the lending portfolios, enhancing quality by providing concise/clear/pertinent action/recommendations. 


Role Context

  • Support the Head of Credit Risk by working autonomously within his/her credit concurrence authorities
  • Review and challenge exception requests and constructively suggest solutions that could help the business achieve its goals
  • Timely escalate concisely articulated issues that could not be resolved at his/her level
  • Attend the Product Oversight Committee as required
  • Validate and take ownership of the activities undertaken by the offshored Credit Risk team (plain vanilla deals, Loan to Value computations…)   


Management of Risk
Risk Management is the essence of the team and role, it is achieved through:

  • Adhering to the letter and spirit of Group and Bank procedure
  • Adequate training and transmission of know how to other team members and other colleagues
  • Being a team player to ensure a proper back up organization for the team, and a diversified exposure to the various tasks the team must undertake
  • Being open and transparent, escalate issues, report mistakes
  • Being alert to Bank’s set risk appetite and understand the team’s role in ensure credit risk remains within this appetite


Observation of Internal Controls

  • Understand, follow and demonstrates compliance with all relevant internal and external rules, regulations and procedures that apply to the conduct of the business in which the jobholder is involved, specifically Internal Controls and any Compliance policy including, inter alia, the Group Compliance policy.

To be successful in the role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • Strong character and negotiation skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and in a context of urgent deadlines
  • Strong financial and non-financial analytical skills ideally including experience of corporate and cash flow lending, together with a good understanding of structural subordination issues and related legal risks. 
  • Real estate lending experience would also be an advantage. 
  • Univerity degree, preferably in Finance/ Economics
  • Ideally three to six year experience in Credit/Risk 
  • Good understanding of private banking needs for credit products including understanding of various financial instruments and derivatives and with a global outlook
  • Capacity to work independly on specific tasks and with a strong eye for detail
  • Due to immigration restrictions in Switzerland we will only be able to consider applications from Swiss or EU citizens or from candidates holding a valid Swiss work permit
