As part of Global Risk, Regulatory Compliance ensures adherence to applicable regulations and standards by setting the policies which cover HSBC’s regulatory requirements and mitigate conduct and reputational risk issues. The team strives to remain ahead of the regulatory change agenda and ensures the business understands the implications and is prepared for change. It monitors how the Global Businesses and Functions manage their responsibilities with regard to complying with the regulations and helps resolve compliance deficiencies.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our Compliance team.

The HSBC Bank plc, Zurich branch, provides banking services to a portfolio of large corporate customers. 

The Senior Compliance Advisor will support on all Financial Crime Compliance (FCC) and Regulatory Compliance (RC) matters impacting the HBCH business. 

In this role you will:

Impact on the Business

  • Advice and guidance to the business on HSBC Group Policy and local regulatory requirements. This includes Anti Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, Sanctions and Prohibitions, Anti Bribery and Corruption and other applicable regulatory requirements impacting business operations
  • Provide advice on new regulatory developments and related policy updates
  • Support implementation and embedding of policies, procedures and controls
  • Provide advice to management in respect of new products and services, or variations to existing products and services
  • Provide appropriate compliance training to the business where required
  • Discharge the accountabilities set out in the HSBC Global Risk FIM

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Provide ongoing advice and guidance on Regulatory and Financial Crime Compliance issues as they arise
  • Support Relationship Managers to grow their portfolio’s whilst ensuring the highest standards of compliance are achieved
  • Establish and maintain good relationships and communication channels with relevant stakeholders including compliance colleagues, relationship managers, business management and other key business functions 

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Extensive support to compliance change programs
  • Manage new / emerging compliance risk issues through to resolution
  • Actively participate in appropriate internal governance meetings

Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Ensure local procedures and controls are in place to achieve compliance with HSBC Group Policy standards and local regulatory requirements
  • Support the implementation and ongoing governance of the Compliance function. Help drive a strong compliance culture across the business 
  • Conduct AML Investigations, including review of business escalations and investigation of AML alerts generated through transaction monitoring
  • Support preparation for external audits on behalf of the local regulator
  • Ensure local issues are escalated to relevant country, region and global stakeholders
  • Coordinate country level responses and actions for AML Audits, and Assurance reviews
  • Contribute to AML and Sanctions risk assessments, including the HSBC Enterprise Wide Risk Assessment
  • Assist in the preparation of senior governance meetings (ExCo and RMM)
  • Perform ongoing analysis of the Country AML MI to provide a strategic appraisal of emerging trends, issues.  Assist and support analysis and research work (where required) on emerging risk trends.  Work with the MI and Data Governance team to provide AML risk data input to recurrent and ad-hoc communications, reports and frameworks for the AML function and other interested parties

Major Challenges

  • The jobholder has to manage key accountabilities in a regulatory environment which is increasingly demanding, complex and challenging
  • Operate with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment
  • Efficiently and regularly cooperate with the Front office and other stakeholders in order to spread Compliance culture, enforce Compliance requirements and respect the Front office business objectives according to the FCC risk appetite framework of the Group and the Bank
  • Perform at all times an adequate follow-up of the tasks in order to escalate potential issues in a timely manner

To be successful in the role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • Proven knowledge of and experience in applying legal and regulatory compliance requirements 
  • Advanced understanding of Commercial Banking business with practical experience in Compliance, Audit or Operational Risk area, Legal background is an asset
  • Team player who can build relationships within a small team and outside the Compliance function
  • Organizational skills
  • Analytical, well-informed and creative approach to problem-solving ability to work independently and to the highest level of accuracy and accountability
  • Computer and IT systems literate, strong communication and writing skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and independently with minimal supervision
  • Good communicator with strong inter-personal skills
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken). Knowledge of German and French are preferred, further language skills are a plus
  • Due to immigration restrictions in Switzerland we will only be able to consider applications from Swiss or EU citizens or from candidates holding a valid Swiss work permit
